Data-Driven Ecological Solutions
Rewild Ecological is a data-driven environmental consulting firm that helps conservation organizations, consulting firms, and private landowners transform complex datasets into actionable strategies, guiding informed decisions and delivering measurable conservation impact through scientific research and restoration.
A recent talk delivered by our founder, Michael Whittemore, at the Sustaining Biodiversity in Sandplain Grasslands conference detailing a regional study and forthcoming paper describing the flora, extent, and rare species of imperiled sandplain grassland. This project showcases our approach of using science to improve applied restoration outcomes for our clients, and the region.

About Rewild Ecological
Founded in 2019 by Michael Whittemore, the mission of Rewild Ecological is to help conservation organizations, environmental consultants and private landowners maximize conservation impact through sound strategy, science and restoration.
Conservation organizations often operate with limited budgets and lack in-house technical capacity. Rewild Ecological fills that gap—strengthening programs through assessment and data-driven strategic planning, and translating complex ecological data into measurable science and restoration outcomes that resonate with funders and communities.
We also partner with private landowners who wish to better understand and enhance their landscapes, improving biodiversity and climate resilience using proven, science-based approaches. Our services include site assessments, biological inventory, restoration, and long-term monitoring to ensure lasting impact.
Michael Whittemore is a landscape ecologist with over a decade of experience in conservation and ecological restoration. He earned an MS in Environmental Studies from Ohio University, where he mapped plant communities across a 2,000-acre old growth nature preserve for his thesis. Early in his career, Michael worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, and academic institutions as a Biological Technician specializing in ecological monitoring and research.
He then served as a researcher at Woodwell Climate Research Center, studying the effects of restoration on coastal ecosystems, and as Stewardship and Restoration Manager at The Nature Conservancy, leading the Cape & Islands program focused on restoring imperiled habitats. Michael later worked as the Ecologist for the 100,000-acre Central Pine Barrens on Long Island before joining the Frenchman Bay Conservancy, where he now serves as Director of Land Stewardship, overseeing 25,000 acres of lands and restoration projects. He has led numerous ecological restoration efforts, biological inventories, and scientific studies across the northeastern United States.
In his free time, Michael enjoys long distance running, ocean kayaking, and visiting old growth forests throughout the northeast. See his outdoor adventure blog.
